How To Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools?

If you’ve just started your blogging career, you might not know how search engines work and how to display your website in the Google search results to drive traffic to your blog.

You can show your website in Google search for free if you can help Google to find your blog.

To do that, you should know about Google Search Console (earlier known as Google Webmaster Tools).

Search Console is a free tool offered by Google which helps you to display your website in Google search results (index or crawl your website).

This tool also helps you to improve the crawling rate of your blog.

All you have to do are a few simple things.

First of all, you’ve to verify in Google Search Console that you’re the owner of the website.

And, the second and most important task is to submit your blog/website sitemap to search console.

Here, I’m going to guide you through step by step methods about how to submit website sitemap to Google webmaster tools.

But, before that we need to understand what actually a sitemap is, and why is it important for your blog to submit a sitemap.

For verifying your website ownership on Search Console, you can refer to this article on Kissmetrics blog.

So, without much further ado, let’s get started.

What is a Sitemap?

As the word sounds, a sitemap is actually a map of your website.

When Google crawlers go around the web indexing new web pages in its database, new blogs are usually missed out as only a few or no sites are linking to them as well as they’re not aware of sitemap thing.

A sitemap is either an XML or HTML file that contains all the URLs of the pages inside your blog.

While HTML sitemap helps your visitors to navigate through your blog, an XML sitemap helps the search engine crawlers the same way.

When you submit an XML sitemap to Google Webmasters, it helps search engine crawlers to find all the URLs on your website and add it to their database.

There are various parts of a sitemap that affect the crawling rate of your blog, such as the size of your sitemap, the number of URLs in your sitemap, indexing priority of pages on your blog, updating frequency, etc.

Now, that you know about sitemap and its importance, let’s move on to the further steps.

Search Console

This tutorial is divided into 2 parts.

One is for submitting sitemap for blog posts (articles) and another one for submitting sitemap for static pages like contact us, about us, privacy policy etc.

Part - 1

Submitting sitemap for blog posts

Step 5: Add the below code in the provided text field.

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500

This is the sitemap code for your blogger blog that you need to add.

Step 6: Press “Submit Sitemap” button.

Step 7: Refresh the page.

Congratulation! You have finished the process of submitting your blog sitemap.

Note: The above sitemap will work for 500 posts only. If you have more than 500 posts published on your blog, then you have to add one more sitemap.

The Whole procedure will be same, but at this time you have to add this code.

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=1000

That's it. You are done with submitting the sitemap for blog posts. Now let's move to the 2nd part i.e submitting sitemap for blogspot static pages.

Part - 2

Submitting sitemap for static pages

The sitemap for blogger static pages is completely different from the blog posts.

If you want Google bots to crawl and index your static pages as well, then you must submit a sitemap for them as well.

As you said that if i have more than 500 posts….we have to add a second sitemap with max-results being 1000. But the submitted column shows only 500. What’s catch here ?

You have to add both the sitemaps one by one.
    atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
It will work for first 500 posts and
    atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=1000
it will work for posts after 500.

      Hey Ankit Singla,

Please check your post again, because you have written atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=501 as you said atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=1000 works for after 500 posts. Hope you got my point 🙂

I have over 4000 post in my blog. What should I do?

Reply
    Ankit Singla

you have to put multiple sitemaps in your google webmaster account.
    atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Look at bold text in the above code.
start-index=1 : Refers to the starting number of the post
max-results=500 refers to the limit of posts in that sitemap.
If you have 4000+ posts in your blog then put sitemaps in below manner
    sitemap 1: from 1 to 500
    sitemap 2: from 501 to 1000
    sitemap 3: from 1001 to 1500
Hope you understand I am trying to say. Good Luck!

Thanks so much for this–i didn’t know how important it was and never would have figured out how to do this on my own. thanks again!

But actually, I have a question: do you only have to do this once and it’s automatically updated whenever you have a new post (or when u reach 1000 posts…? Thanks!

Reply
    Ankit Singla

Yes dear, it will automatically work for all of your posts. Once you cross the limit of 500 posts, then you just need to submit one more sitemap. Simple

I am a newbie blogger. Sorry but I didn’t exactly understood what it is for. All I knew is that I have to do it in order to claim ownership of my blog and improve my index rate. (do not understand “index rate” either) I just gave it a try, why not? I am not sure what will happen. But thanks anyway. Your instructions are very easy, even a newbie like me got it.

Submitting Sitemap is one of the most important things to be done. Whether it is Google Webmaster or Bing Webmaster we need to do it before all other tasks. You’ve done a good work while bringing this thing to the readers.

Hello Ankit,
I have a bloggger blo having posts more than 500 and i submitted the sitemap generated from other website but that website generated sitemap as
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500

But you have written that for posts more than 500 the site map should be
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=500&max-results=1000

i am confused which sitemap is correct “index=500&max-results=1000″ OR “index=501&max-results=500″ Please help me and also i have read on some websites that using this type of sitemaps reduces the traffic. is it correct.

Hey i need some help, i have submitted my sitemap 4-5 days ago and i used this code ” /feeds/posts/default” as far as i know it only indexes up to 26 posts but my blog has more than 35 posts, so today i have submitted your code as well. So my question is will there be an issue having both these codes on “Google webmasters tool “?

Hi,

I submitted it but the issue is that it is going with only maximum of 500 urls. I tried changing the number in the end but it does not works. Any idea about submitting like more than 1000 urls ?

Thanks a lot for that. Usually the site maps can be generated by some free online resources. They usually come in .xml form. But I was in a fix when I wanted to index my blogspot blog. This post helped me to submit the sitemap pretty quickly. Didn’t understand the redirect part though. But, anyway, it got indexed and will be crawled within a few hours I suppose. Thank you for the tutorial.

I have two questions.

1. Lets say I have manually created folders inside my blog, how am I going to put site maps for those URL’s.

2. And how to create sitemaps if there are 1000’s of URL’s involved. I know there are websites that offers the service for free, but they dont seem to grab everything 100%

Any thoughts? thanks for explaining the process.
